Pine Needle Oil

  • Obtained from Pinus sylvestris leaves, twigs and branches
  • α-Pinene is one of the major constituents (7.0 -16.1 %) of needle essential oils of Pinus sylvestris8

  • Anti-inflammatory
  • Antiseptic
  • Rubefascient
  • Contra-indicated in case of known allergies or hypersensitivity to pine oil

Mechanism of Action

  • Most likely due to a reduction in the release of nitric oxide (NO, nitric acid)
  • α-Pinene induces suppression of MAPKs and the NF-κB Pathway in Mouse Peritoneal Macrophages

Analgesia10

  • α-Pinene inhibits COX-2 overexpression in mice hind-paw model
  • Activation of endogenous opioid-dependent analgesic pathways
